History and Heritage

The Boonwurrung Aboriginal people are the traditional custodians of the land in which Cranbourne is built on. The arrival of the Ruffy brothers in 1836 marked the first European settlement in the area, and they later established the Cranbourne Inn. As more settlers arrived in the 1860s, the land around Cranbourne began to develop, although progress was initially hindered by the Koo Wee Rup swampland. Thanks to the efforts of William Lyall and other pioneers, the swamp was drained, making the land suitable for farming.

Cranbourne served as the administrative centre of the Shire of Cranbourne from 1860 until 1994, with the council building now repurposed as the Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre. The suburb’s rich history can still be seen in its well-preserved buildings and landmarks, such as the Old Shire Offices on the corner of Sladen Street and South Gippsland Highway.
